why liminal spaces feel like home

27 JUL 2026_ □ ×

Liminal spaces are supposed to feel unsettling, but most of them feel strangely comfortable to me.

An empty hallway, a silent shopping centre, a school after everyone has gone home, or a pool room with nobody inside can feel more peaceful than creepy. They are places built for people, but temporarily free from people. The normal purpose of the space disappears for a moment, and what remains is the atmosphere.

I think that is why I feel at home in them. There is no pressure to perform or interact. Nothing is asking anything from me. I can just exist inside a place that feels familiar without having to explain why it feels familiar.

I honestly cannot think of many liminal spaces that I would find scary. Even the darker ones usually make me curious. I want to see what is around the next corner, what room connects to the hallway, and how far the place continues when it should have ended already.

That feeling is a huge part of what I want from games and from things I make myself. Not horror exactly. More like being alone somewhere impossible and feeling completely fine with it.
